Controlled Substance Policy

At DT Pediatrics, our priority is providing safe, responsible, and evidence-based pediatric care. This policy outlines our position regarding controlled substances.

What Is a Controlled Substance?

A controlled substance is a medication regulated by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) under the Controlled Substances Act due to its potential for misuse, dependency, or abuse.

DT Pediatrics Policy

DT Pediatrics does not prescribe controlled substances under any circumstances.

This includes:

  • Initial prescriptions

  • Refills

  • Replacement prescriptions for lost or stolen medications

  • Short-term or emergency prescriptions

If a patient requires evaluation or treatment involving controlled substances, we will recommend consultation with an appropriate in-person provider or specialist.

This policy applies to all telehealth visits.

Examples of Controlled Substances

Controlled substances include, but are not limited to:

Stimulants (often used for ADHD)

  • Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine)

  • Ritalin (methylphenidate)

  • Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine)

  • Concerta (methylphenidate extended release)

Opioid Pain Medications

  • Oxycodone

  • Hydrocodone

  • Morphine

  • Codeine

  • Fentanyl

Benzodiazepines (anxiety/seizure medications)

  • Xanax (alprazolam)

  • Ativan (lorazepam)

  • Valium (diazepam)

  • Klonopin (clonazepam)

Certain Sleep Medications

  • Ambien (zolpidem)

  • Lunesta (eszopiclone)

Other Schedule Medications

  • Certain cough syrups containing codeine

  • Some anti-seizure medications

  • Testosterone and anabolic steroids

This list is not exhaustive.

Why We Do Not Prescribe Controlled Substances

As a pediatric telehealth practice, we prioritize:

  • Patient safety

  • Appropriate monitoring

  • Compliance with federal and state regulations

  • Responsible prescribing practices

Controlled substances often require in-person evaluation, ongoing monitoring, and specific regulatory documentation that cannot be adequately fulfilled in our telehealth-only setting.

Alternative Care

DT Pediatrics is happy to:

  • Provide non-controlled medication options when appropriate

  • Offer behavioral strategies and supportive care

  • Coordinate care with your child’s primary care provider or specialist

  • Provide referrals when needed
